Mother Nature - "BAD GIRL"
« on: December 22, 2020, 09:31:45 AM »
Mother Nature dropped the curtain on my fishing for a while...maybe the rest of the winter. The last several winters weren't too bad but this one has not started off well.
Penns Creek is just about frozen over

Water levels remain very low and very clear. You can still see the ledges sticking out in this picture. Unusual for December.

Water temps have dropped and as long as nighttime temps remain below freezing the shoreline ice will keep building up as in these pictures.

Access area

One of my better holes

And of course 15-18" of snow have made shoreline access somewhat treacherous for a septuagenarian.

But my bluebirds still know where I live. I fledged 11 of them this year from my yard boxes and I counted 7 of them this week coming to eat suet and meal-worms.

And my amaryllis is blooming its heart out.

Have a safe Christmas holiday and New Year. Be careful on the ice (either fishing or just walking). I'll be fishing in the Spring unless "Mother" decides to be kind to me.  ;) :)

After 15 or so inches of snow...mother nature provided us with 60 degree weather and almost 3 inches of rain...what a mess  >:(

The Susquehanna crested today at Sunbury near 24 feet...here are some pics from my haunt on the Isle of Que.

The boat access ramp was fully covered...

And the water was up on the road...

Many of my favorite shoreline fishing spots are no longer visible...

Many of the local wharves and boat docks are totally covered...

The one good thing is that all the old ice is gone and most of the summer and fall leaves and woody debris along the shoreline should be gone. Water temps rose to 40F but with all the snow melt dropped again to 35F. When the water level drops to 10 feet I may have a window for fishing as long as temps don't get too low to form new shoreline ice.

My boat ramps. we Crested at 17.49 a rise of about 16'
Antlers Launch

Greevy Launch, Which I was interested in fishing. But it might be a while till that gets cleaned up.

Right where that blue cooler is where the road goes down to launch.

Dry thanks for the pictures!  That one of that ramp is pretty amazing. Lot of water.
A fair amount of rain on the way for Thursday which might not be good.

Do you think I can fish this creek with my 14' aluminum boat? I actually can do better in 10" or so with the jet (3-5 mph) versus the trolling motor.

Mother Nature has been tough this winter.
They finally got the Greevy launch plowed after the last 12" snow. That took almost 2 months.

Above the Damm the launch needs plowed and the river is froze over.

To much snow and ice to really get out and bank fish.

Me I have been busy trying to keep my driveway clear... 2-4" predicted tonight.

I picked up a couple crankbaits from Sixth Sense. We will see how they work.
Kind of one of them deals where the lure caught the fisherman.  :D

Phil
Am not sure how much water Penns Creek holds. I know there is some nice bass in the creek.
I would think turtling in 1' of water you would do ok...But I don't know the creek at all.
My son fly fishes some part of it for trout.
You have any Kayaks to be able to get a feel for the creek?

Everyone stay warm and hopefully spring isn't to far away.

I do not have a fishing kayak. Thought it would be neat. I still have knees and could do it, but the idea of getting wet in 33 degree water has slowed that thought!

You wouldn't probably get wet.
This kind of weather though would probably wear wet suit under some kayaking pants and top.
Usually just layer.

Maybe Dry knows the creek. When it gets a little warmer I would give it a scout.

I've fished Penn's from the 35 overpass at the speedway back to the river. Sunbury gauge needs to be a minimum of 12', prefer 13' and up, or it's just too skinny in a few areas to get up in a jet
