Title: It's Wading Season Again
Post by: DRY on November 15, 2017, 07:57:50 AM
Time for long rods and light line.
As I get older I find myself staying closer to the shoreline and when the smallmouth move out...well...that's the time for long casts.
It is surprising how far a hard suspending jerkbait can be hurled with a 7 1/2-8 foot ML rod and 4-6 lb. monofilament line.

The Susquehanna is falling again and these three pound beauties had left the shoreline and were feeding far out.

Just remember to re-tie often...that light line takes a beating.  ;)

And...just in case anyone is following the pollution problems in the upper mainstem...the smallmouth where I fish still have black spots.

Bill, Nice post! I am going to try winter wading for sm for the first time. Have the wading  gear from my old steelheading days in NY. I live close to the Perkiomen Cr and Schukyll R. Can you give me any tips on how to find productive water from the shoreline so i'm not wasting a lot of time.  Are jerk baits the lure of choice?

Thanks
Dennis

Once the water drops below 45 F jerkbaits are inconsistent
At 40 or below ....even worse
I would use a small tube, a small worm (3 inch) or some other small profile finesse bait to test the water
More likely to find them that way in cold water
Winco makes some excellent small finesse baits that work well

John, I'm originally from Royersford. The bridge to Spring City and the pool below used to be a hot smallie spot. I'm going to start in Pottstown and work my way to Royersford. Should be interesting.
