Why?
« on: December 26, 2016, 06:23:11 PM »
Still looking for smallmouth...but why can I only catch carp.

Water temps came up 2 degrees and the ice has pretty much gone...levels and color look good but 36F must still be a little cold for the smallies.

Carp are stacked in all the winter shoreline pools. Three came to hand today with 2 snags and one bonafide hit on a black and blue rabbit hair jig. I just couldn't lift these bruisers today. They are fun with 6 lb mono and a long ML rod.

Tail snag...

This one ate the jig...

And this quillback also took the jig...a face only a mother could love.

Hoping that a few more days in the 40's will stimulate the smallmouth to eat.

I've caught a few smaller ones, never a big  boy though.  I know a guy that fishes for them exclusively.  My guess would be the unstable temps & weather has the bass shut off.   You should have some more decent wading weather coming up for a week or so.

We have mostly marginal ice up north of you, I have yet to get on any ice.  Looks like the 2nd week of January for most lakes unless one is will to travel north to Pike or Wayne counties.

I find it interesting that carp eat hair jigs. I know a man who makes fly rods in Harrisburg and loves fishing for carp with a fly rod and nymphs...that is apparently one of their favorite foods.

I did not make this hair jig. 1/8 oz. on an aspirin head jig.

I have made them in past years but this one was purchased at a vendor at the Calvary Outdoor Expo last winter in Souderton, PA.
