Title: Schulkyill on a dreary morning.
Post by: icemole on May 06, 2018, 12:15:04 PM
Figured it might be a good morning for the RARE Schulkyill walleye(haven't been stocked in  20+yrs LOL) and since the bait shop threw in 4 lg. shiners(guess they didn't quite have a dz. smalls) I though why not.  Put 1 shiner out on a floating jighead and started tossing a twister on the other rod. Bumped a couple of carp (?) with the twister  and then .... action on the shiner. Set the hook and got a real nice 16" smallie(shocker - both on size and where I caught her). Rebaited and tossed out again 100 more casts with the twister and more action on the shiner. Sadly I swung + missed  so dug in the bucket for shiner #3 and he flops out of my hand into the water LOL. Last one goes on with no problems toss back out. About 40 casts with the twister - I hook up on the twister staying down doesn't feel foul hooked thinking maybe I got a wally.... but....... NO another smallie  this one a fat(preggo) 12".   Had 1 more bite on the shiner but after 2 taps.... nothing.  So while no walleye(didn't really expect any) + 2 suprise smallies I called it a morning.

Don't really fish walleye anymore since I gave up eating any fish in Pennsylvania  :P
Didn't know there were any in the "All-kill"  ;)
They quit stocking them in the Susquehanna River some years back and the population fell significantly. Biologists thought they could self-sustain themselves but that did not happen. I understand that they began stocking again but where I fish the walleye have not really come back. Before 2000 there used to be guys trolling and lining the banks in this section of the main stem all winter seeking walleye...now there are very few. I catch a few every winter.
Chartreuse twisters, smoke twisters and a shiner were always the mainstays for walleye around here.

I always manage about 6 a year in the Harrisburg area. Supprisingly the ones I catch avg about 18", had one last year around 24". All go back in the drink.

Not sure if you were directing it towards me or not. So I will answer anyways. For the Harrisburg gauge, no. Some where between 3-3.5'

I went down to the skuke today, thru a jig 60 times and a crankbait about 40 did not get a bite, the river is about 2 ft higher than it should be

The Skuke is close to normal flow and actually a little below normal for this time of year
