Title: Water clarity Harrisburg to Sunbury
Post by: Heavyduty on September 30, 2018, 05:22:33 PM
Thinking about coming up to smallmouth fish this coming week. Water levels appear to be dropping and around 6.6' by Wednesday so that's a good sign. How is water clarity?
Thanks! HD

Good to go at Sunbury...just checked the water today before supper...thought about getting the boat out tomorrow but water still a little high and fast for me...will likely trample the shoreline a little.

Better on the west shore ...east shore not as good but fishable.

Thanks guys! Just going by the gauges, thought it would be best to start the week near Shamokin/Que and work my way downriver. Your replies confirm that. Will now plan on a Tues-Friday trip.

bill ... I fear the season is over. jf7

Get out the long johns, the insulated waders and the fancy gloves ... it's never over  :)

Winter smallmouth fishing is some of the best you can get...providing mother nature doesn't continue her cruel streak this winter.  >:(

it seems like if you have a boat and know where to go, the fishing is still great.  On another forum a guy was just saying they caught 88 over the weekend and a dozen or so walleye.

Well, we showed up in Selinsgrove about 1pm Tuesday. Found river exactly as Bill described. Fished a trib and caught 20 nice smallies in the 16"-18" range on spinnerbaits and T-rigged senko. Buddy came up later around 4pm and texted me that there was a tornado watch for the area. We fished till 5pm and decided we shouldn't press our luck so we loaded up the boat. Went to Skeeter's BBQ for dinner, good ribs and pulled pork. Heading back to hotel the lightning was putting on a show. Got the boat covered, got inside, and the bottom fell out.

Next morning left the hotel at 7am so as we were driving south we could see the water. The trib was mud and much higher so we went down to Mahontango. Both of the tribs there were muddy, less than 6" visibility. Went downriver to some islands and found a stretch of decent water with about 18" visibility. It was roughly 100yds wide running from center of river to the west bank. Between our two boats we caught 50+ smallies and a couple catfish. Spinnerbait, chatterbait, underspin swimbait. Some were right on the bank but most hit a slow rolled bait about 20' from shore. All good size, 16"-18", and fat. We got off the river around 4:30, we had just about lost our water clarity, muddy water was filling in.

Left this morning and headed back home to VA. My buddy stopped at the Juniata and caught 20 some between 8-noon. River was high but clear (green tint). He said you couldn't get another truck/trailer in the Amity Hall lot. Everybody flocked to the good water! Will be back the last week of the month. Hopefully river levels/clarity will be somewhat normal.

That was a real show on Tuesday night, eh!!

We only got 1.5 inches of rain but we lost power for 3 hours after the big blow that came through.

Sounds like you got some nice fish and "Susie-Q" showed you some "Southern hospitality" even though she was a little dirty and old mother nature cut your trip a little short.

Crested early this AM at Shady Nook. Let's hope for the best the rest of this month.
