Title: mid-October doldrums??
Post by: DRY on October 17, 2018, 12:56:15 PM
Fished (waded) the old girl today starting around 9:30 AM (just can't bring myself to get the boat out)

Picked up 2 nice smallmouth on the first 2 casts   :D ...and then.................nothing for 2 hours...not a hit.

"Mariah" (the wind) picked up and the white caps rolled and the leaves fell.

It ain't right...but then it ain't been right all summer  >:(  :(

We shall overcome!!  8)

Waded a little this afternoon ( 2-3 hrs.)

Picked up 4 smallmouth on tubes. Snagged one. Snagging smallmouth to me means they are sitting tight with their mouths closed. Happens to me more often in 35 degree water.

Brisk upriver wind again today...nice cold front...14 degree water temperature drop in 7 days.

Accu Weather Forecast shows 30-40 degree night time temps thru the end of October into November. Water might not warm up much during the day at that rate...giving us a very short Fall and a long Winter.

I was finally able to get into the water with my boat. It's been about 6 weeks for the starts to align. Still pretty stained, my best luck was below a small trip where there was a bit of clearer water mixing in with the muddy main flow. Wasn't any bonanza. I got a couple aroune 16 inches and a few sardine sized walleyes. Funny thing, Very cast I hooked a 30 inch ish musky or pike didn't last long on 6 pound test.

You can always catch a few channel cats. river bank conditions are not very pleasant at this time. Very thick mud.

It's been a very tough summer. I've caught my fair share but had to take advantage of every day I could. I've started taking my boat apart, replaced the floor, repainting some, ordered a new motor, re wired the trailer etc...Getting ready for next spring already! Ha! Oh boy, it's gonna be a long winter for me. I should not have fixed the old boat up so soon! She's lookin good. On the bright side, my home did not get flooded as a lot of folks had trouble. For that I'm thankful. Hope that those who did have trouble get back to their routine a soon as they can.

Had the boat out yesterday afternoon, Monday, got a couple eyes 15.5 and a 13 incher. A few small smallies and two mid sized channel cats. Water is still pretty cloudy and higher than I'd like it.

Spent another windy morning hunting the smallmouth....where are they  ???

Maybe with all the water they are spread out and found better grazing land than where I usually wade. It's also full moon.

The handful of smaller fish I caught seemed to like the upriver casts (had little choice at times) and the slow downriver bounce with the line bowing upstream...it was easy to feel the slow bounce of the jig downstream in a very controlled slow rhythm. That's when they would hit it.

Perseverance is the key...I guess!!.. ::) ;)  :)

Just had to get out Sunday morn even with the cold and wind. Put in at the garden drive in muddy launch {make sure to have 4wheel if you do} and had a good morning. Caught a muskie, walleyes, a big perch, rock bass and some SM bass. Needed a catfish for a Susky grand slam!(https://i.imgur.com/4gjMxTQ.jpg)

Looks like the one I broke off Thursday. Did it have a brown jig in its mouth?

Sorry, no brown jig in that muskies mouth FM, caught him on a pumpkin tube. I put him back in so you can catch him next week. Fished the Berwick area today and caught a few walleye and several average SM bass. Learned my lesson this summer, you better fish when you can!
