If you can collect a couple dozen of those they make dandy bait for channel cats.

I believe it! What do you think caused a die off like that? Lack of nutrients?

The die offs are common. Alewifes are a salt water fish that can tolerate freshwater, so right off the bat they are stressed. Then they get under the ice in colder temps than they prefer and more stress. By the end of the winter the plankton their food is gone and they starve to death.. The healthiest survive and start it over.

According to the article, this is something that happens every year. In the fall they draw down the lake. In the spring to prepare for the snow melt and rain and to prevent flooding they release water from the dam. This is when the alewifes are flushed out of the lake and into the Tulpenhocken stream (which is a great place for fly-fishing for trout). The stress and force of the release is what kills the alewifes basically by giving them "The bends".  Air bubbles in the alewifes bodies are what kill or stun most of them and then the seagulls from the local landfill swoop in to feed. Pretty interesting stuff.
