Low and Clear
« on: November 13, 2016, 10:55:04 PM »
The fall bite is in full swing on the Susky! I spent an afternoon till dark Saturday and Sunday Morning till 1 bailing in smallies and picked up a few of the good sized walleyes with more to come for sure. I was fishing deep waters on a steep bank with some fish coming up from over 20 fow. All were jigged on 1/4 oz white head and 2 inch chartreuse power bait curly grubs. They were definitely preferring the jigs with a small live bait but I did get both eyes and smallies on just the power baits. Water temp was in the mid forties. I always figured that I would make a good boat fisherman. I'd be sitting on the banks of the river watching the boat guys wondering wtf are they doing out there?? I was reminded of that Saturday as the Nimitz class jet boats raced up and down the river looking for Shangri la. Meanwhile, I was enjoying fabulous fishing, and the waves they were kicking up created an enhanced mudlline right along the shore that was making cover for the predators.
Enjoy it while you can ice fishing is silently sneaking up on us.

20 feet of water  :o ......the only time I see that much water on the upper main stem is during a major flood.

I am always amazed at the topographic/geologic difference in the various sections of the watershed. Fishing 20 feet of water is like fishing a Canadian shield lake...only moving water.

Not as many walleye or walleye fishermen around this area anymore. Good eating fish for sure.

That first picture through the net is a gem.

Nice fish! The above average air temperatures and sunny days this week have seemed to be the bass on the feed. I fished out of Apple Tree yesterday and did really well. I put 10 solid smallies and a nice walleye in the boat in a just a couple hours of work. Slow to moderate current, in deeper water was the ticket for me. I'll try to upload some pictures here later today. It looks as though next week the bottom may begin falling out, temperature wise. I'm ready for ice!

Just got in from a five hour stint on the river. Noticeably slower than the weekend madness. I did get quite a few smallmouth anyway including a few that were pushing the 18 inch mark. Walleyes were all cigar sized mini eyes. Eagles were out and the water was again low and clear. Some rain would do it good.
