Back out after Flatheads.
« on: May 30, 2017, 10:16:37 PM »
So begins year 3 of my North Branch Flathead quest. I upgraded my boat sort of lol.  My batteries are charged up and looking forward to many nights swatting the flying clippers and catching lots of channel cats and hopefully a few flatties too. I am the proud owner of a vintage Spectrum 1709 bass boat circa: 1989 She ain't purty but she will float, for now. Lots of bites last night but my fine tuned hook setting trigger needs a bit of practice. I managed about 8 with three in the 27 28 inch class.

I had the same model boat in fact it was my first boat I ever bought. Is it dark blue on the sides? Nice comfy boat!

Nice cats!

I think they sold the same boat under a couple different names. Mine is a spectrum but there is one called a BlueFin that looks just like it. Mine has a blue and redish stripe on the sides. I'll post a pic next time out.

Yep - mine was a Spectrum. Did your boat come from Juniata County? Heck it may be my old boat. If it is - I took good care of it until I sold it. I'm sure it will be a good boat for you.

Was out Sunday evening with my son. He got a chance to try out his Ugly Stick Christmas rod and managed a smallie before we quit that to set up for catfishin. Had about 10 between us with lots of missed chances. He bested me on size with two really nice ones. I'm going out tonight and try a new spot.

Scratch the fishing tonight.  I was minutes away from hitting the road for the launch when a few drops started to come down.  An inch and a half of rain later.my boat was full of h2o. Going to try again tomorrow.

Nice Cats! I haven't been out for cats in a little while. I've been doing some tributary fishing for smallies recently, it's one of my favorite summertime pursuits  8)

FM, do you still use cutbait in the summer for cats or do you use live bluegills?

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in doing some fishing together this summer for cats! I'm definitely up for it  ;)

Channels cats seem to be getting ready to spawn, getting smaller ones and seeing some with rubs and battle scars. I may try some different spots to see what I can drum up. My bro is coming in from CO Thursday so I won't be getting out for a few days while he is here.

As far as bait goes I'm targeting flatheads which is a lonely quest. They are few and far between here, the bright side is that I catch a fair ammount of slammer channel cats of the big live blue gills. If I was looking for channels cut bait or livers would do the trick.
