The Ice Man Cometh !!

Well...I drove down to my fishing hole today. As expected...low,clear,cold conditions have brought on the worst situation for wading the shoreline. Shoreline ice  along with floating ice from shore to shore.





But    the good thing is that the bluebirds are back. Earlier this week six of them began coming to the kitchen window for mealworms. They even fed from my wife's hand.







Don't know when I will fish or post again ... so Merry Christmas from my porch.

Likewise merry Christmas. Just looked at the forecast for Harrisburg on my phone. Starting this Saturday to the following Saturday, the temps are well above freezing. Maybe the pesky ice will disappear for you. As a early Christmas present.

I haven't seen a blue bird since, I believe Sept. when there were some checking out the house in my yard, hopefully to return in the spring.  I never see them in winter.  I thought they flew south but the only food I have out is seed.  Do you raise your mealworms or buy them?  If so where do you buy them?

I never saw them in winter until I began feeding mealworms. They do migrate depending on how far north you live. But in my area (Selinsgrove area) as long as they can find food, cover (housing) and unfrozen water...some of them stay.

I've tried raising mealworms but I just cannot raise enough to feed the whole neighborhood. 
You can buy them from several sources:
1. Local tackle shops has them all winter for the ice fishermen.
2. Pet stores have them for people who feed turtles, frogs and lizards. (Yuck!!  )

Brewguy, when I crossed the turnpike bridge yesterday morning. I saw floating ice, for the whole span. Wasn't well formed yet. So maybe the thaw this weekend and next week will clear it out.
