Ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
« on: March 12, 2019, 02:08:41 PM »
The bear has come out of hibernation!!

He is hungry!!

And fish are on the menu!!

So many signs of Spring!! Grackles, cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds and robins are all back. Geese  are flying. Crocuses are blooming. Black stone flies are emerging on the Susquehanna and sea gulls are coming up from the Chesapeake Bay. Mergansers and loons are on the water.

And the water temp has reached that magical number 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Picked up 8 smallies in about 2 hours this AM and missed another 5-6. Either the bears reflexes are still asleep or the smallmouth were just toying with the bear. Grrrrr!!!  :)

Most were in the 2-2.5 pound bracket with a couple of 3 pounders thrown in the mix.

The bear is happy !!   ;)  ;D

Well done, Bill!  Is that the Undulator on the jighead?

I am hoping to get out for the first time this year on Thursday.  I am tired of everything about winter.

Yep...the Undulator with a few stands of "flashabou" sown in...

although the water temp was 40F the bass where I was were still acting like it was winter...

"Deadstick" for 5-10 seconds...followed by a quick twitch of the wrist. 'Beary, beary' successful technique.  ;D

Did you take that reading, or were you using the data from Danville  at the USGS site?  Interesting that the SHWPC site said the temp at Clarke was 40 yesterday.  Today it says it is 43.

Yesterday morning when I fished... the Danville gauge was reading between 38-39F

My glass/alcohol thermometer read 40F where I was fishing.

We are still having some cold nights. The bear may go back into hibernation  :D

But the warmer days should keep the water temperature in the 38-40F range.

Now I'm in a push-pull situation. The calendar and temperature are keeping me in, and your post is pulling me out. What to do?

As that professional tournament fisherman, Billy Shakespeare, once said:

"To fish ?...
             or not to fish? ...
                                   What a stupid question!!  ;)  :)

Was going through some of my lure molds.  Because I wanted to get rid of some of them.  And found a standup jig mold I never used.  After seeing these posts I got to try the stand up jig.  Poured some yesterday.

I have been using the football shape stand-up jighead for almost all of my winter fishing.

Here is a neat instructional video showing the design and the action of the stand-up jighead that I am using.

Was out three days this week, the smallies are starting to hit again. Yesterday managed 9 SM bass and 3 walleyes all on small pumpkin tubes.
