Crayfish - alive?
« on: June 06, 2019, 06:55:53 AM »
Does anyone know how to keep crayfish alive for a few days until you use them?  My daughter and I caught some for the weekend, I had in a big bucket of water but they still died over night.

When I was younger and could stay up till dark we used to go out with lights and find crayfish along creek banks that have just shed their shells, softshells, then take their pinchers off and wrap them in toilet paper, put in a mason jar and place in refrigerator. They would keep for a week or better and were an excellent bait for SM and channel cats, even caught a few muskies on them. Hooked thru the collar on a 5/0 hook and enough weight to get them down and you won't wait long for a hit. A 5/0 hooks sounds big till your catching 7" SM with no problem. This is about the time of year you can find them.

Be careful it's illegal to have live crayfish away from the place of capture. If taking them you are supposed to rip the heads off.  It's fine catch them and use them for bait but no remove them.
