Unfortunately raw sewage dump from excessive rain is common through out the entire country. Not a new issue yet it still exists. Abysmal! Anyone using social media should protest. Suggested reading from Bill: "Silent Spring" From "Silent Spring" the Albert Schweiter quote just after the copyright says it all: "Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the earth"

My Aunt was telling me the statistics for when the sun will implode etc., which is a long time in the future, ending our existence. I told her man will render the earth dead long before that comes.

Sorry for the philosophical rant - but it is all true.

So far...the Susquehanna River has suffered a lot of environmental tragedies...and has survived. How many more she can weather is anybody's guess. The current problems of bacterial and fungal contamination and chemical (endocrine disruptor) pollution have put great stress on the fishery and is also affecting human health.

If you enjoy reading and would like to read a history of the environmental assaults on the Susquehanna over the past 200 years then this book might be of interest....

FWIW, I sent 4 emails to my local and US representatives. Might be an effort in futility!

Do you really think posting something on a stupid website is going to help?

Actually I do. Remember Egypt's revolution? The outcome was due mostly to Facebook and Twitter. When people have had enough, change can come.
BTW I do not use social media at all!

I retired in 2003. For the next 3 years I worked with a local environmental group on water quality issues and dump contamination in Northumberland PA.
We met with the PA Fish and Boat Commission (John Arway CEO), the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper, the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper, with PA legislators, with college science professors, with environmental physicians from local hospitals (including Geisinger)...we talked to citizens groups, wrote letters to federal politicians, the EPA, the PADEP and individual committees of both the US House and Senate.
It was exasperating...and we got nowhere.
In the final analysis...the only way to effect any change is to go to court and sue...and hope you win your case in front of a federal judge (or jury). That is even more exasperating and takes $$$$. Even then...if you win...the odds of getting the mess cleaned up are small because there is so much to do, little money to do it and little public support in doing it. We would have to change the way they live...and we are not going to do that.
The environmental contamination of our land...especially our watershed and water supply...is a freight train heading for a cliff.
If environmental activism makes you feel good...go for it.
I'm going to enjoy what I have for as long as I have it.
