Nice looking jigs! Throw a little tinsel in some too. Not much - just enough to catch their eye. Remember you can put too much hair in them - less is better.

Also have you tried powder paint? then put them heat them for 20 min in an old toaster oven or over a wood stove. No more chipping!

I also use powder to paint jigheads and find it more convenient.
I use a dip method.
Hold the hook of the jig in a pliers...pass the lead head through an alcohol flame a few times being careful not to get it too hot and melt it...then a quick dip in the powder paint... and hang the jig on a wire to cool.
Once you get the timing down...it works pretty well without a big investment in equipment.

Thanks. Factory jigs have too much hair! I used to use red hooks. Now I just wrap in a little red - I have one buddy who is adamant a little red is good. Seems to work either way, I cannot tell a difference and put the red in. I have been painting jigs this way longer than I care to admit. Back when Barlow's had 2 part epoxy I do not think there was powder paint. Never seen a reason to change. When I am lazy I just use a sharpie!
Here is a craft fur jig with flash.

Funny but sometimes my ugliest jigs work.

I have gotten mine from Janns Netcraft

Thanks.  I have been wanting to get some Hollywood jigs but Josh is still not making them.  This may be time for me to give making my own a try.

The link you posted says to bake after dipping.  You find that isnít necessary?

I was surprised that some kind of green wasnít available.  I probably use green pumpkin more than anything else.

I have a Janns paper catalog that shows green pumpkin and watermelon colors in powder paint.

I guess if you're a "tough guy" you can hang them in an oven  ;) :D  I don't have a portable oven  and was always too lazy to take them upstairs to the kitchen.

1. Heat lead head with an alcohol burner...a torch may get too hot...too fast...doesn't need to be super hot.
2. One quick pass into the powder...knock off excess powder
3. Sometimes a final quick pass through the flame helps even the paint and melt any unmelted powder.
4. Hang it on a wire stretched between 2 nails.

Yes...in the rocky Susquehanna...all jigs chip.........but they don't really last that long to worry about it and the fish don't seem to care.

Most of the time I'm like Dry - dip them then fish. BUT baking them makes them almost chip proof. Huge difference in chipping!! If you are making chatterbait or spinnerbait heads DEFINATELY bake them.

My buddy has a wood stove in his garage and he just hangs them on a wire over the stove and lets them there all night. It seems to bake them just fine. I bought some used toater ovens at a yard sale for 2.00 a piece and they work great for baking.

Are you guys pouring your own lead, or are you buying unpainted jig heads?

pouring

I buy 1000 mustad 2/0 jig hooks for around $30.00 then split them with a buddy. He supplies the lead and pours them (he is off in the winter) and I supply the hooks and the molds. It works out great.

Thanks.  A quick search didn't produce anywhere near that price for the hooks.  Can you give me a source for that and the lead?

I do both. I pour round head, aspirin head and tube head jigs myself. Years back I acquired hundreds of pounds of lead water pipes from a plumber who was renovating old houses in our rural area. It has served me well for muzzleloader balls and jigheads over the years.I recently gave it to my neighbor who casts bullets. He keeps me in lead but I don't use much anymore.

Specialty jigs...football stand-up jigs that I use with cold water finesse lures I buy already molded and I paint them.

I also use Mustad BLN (black nickel) hooks for my jigs.
