From Dry's posts I may be too inclined for hair jigs in cold water.

Just for clarity...seldom do I use hair jigs in cold water

I know some people swear by them and maybe I should use them more.

Some of my smaller cold water finesse baits have silicone strands (Willie Wannabee) and I do have a few of Wincos cross cut rabbit hair jigs but I seldom use them.

I also use powder to paint jigheads and find it more convenient.
I use a dip method.
Hold the hook of the jig in a pliers...pass the lead head through an alcohol flame a few times being careful not to get it too hot and melt it...then a quick dip in the powder paint... and hang the jig on a wire to cool.
Once you get the timing down...it works pretty well without a big investment in equipment.

I saw harbor freight has powdered paint, white and black. Very inexpensive. Can this be used for jigs?

For you guys that are throwing hair jigs -  when do you use a trailer and when do you go without one?

Above 50 degrees I always use a trailer. Below 50 I may use both. Real cold definitely no trailer,  like maybe 45 and below.

I was surprised that some kind of green wasn’t available.  I probably use green pumpkin more than anything else.

Zelmo -

Look at the post I entered called Oh!! Yeah!!

The jigheads of the 2 lures were done with green pumpkin powder paint from Jann's Netcraft.

I guess one question is how long have you had that paint?  It isn't on their website.

Here is what they now have:

More on the price of lead.  I reload shot shells for trap and skeet.  The last shot I bought was about two months ago at Richland Shooter Supply in Richland, PA for $36 per 25lb bag and I haven't heard about an increase.  The price is usually the same at Shyda's in Lancaster.  Those are the two places everybody that I know that reloads, buy their components.
The older I get, the better I used to be.

OK...I admit it...I may have been wrong (don't tell my wife  8))

The powder paint that I have is called Pro Tec powder paint...here are the available colors:

I may have gotten mine at Bass Pro or some other bait shop or Jann's may have quit carrying Pro Tec...I have had the powder paint for a loooong time.

I found this video.    Sure makes it look easy.  I am going to add some powder paint to my BF TW order.

Yep!!  It's that easy!! Very little investment of $$
You may have to remove paint from the eye with a needle or metal pick if you get too much on the jig...but that's no problem.

Bill, do you use a separate container for the powder or do you dip right into the jar it comes in?

I use the jar it came in. I just shake it a little now and then to loosen up the powder.

I am definitely going to try making my own jigs and have a couple of questions.

Are you using bucktail or something else?  How far does it go, meaning how much do I buy to do maybe 100 jigs?

Also, is there anything special about the thread to use?  Any reason to get one type over another?

Most of my jigs are black or brown bucktail. I have always had it and dye my own. Just get ladies hair dye at pharmacy, instead of 10-20 min application leave in the bucket for at least a day. Keep the tails or get from your buddies.
Here is my stash:

You tube jig tying (great channel). I wondered why my hair would start to come off. Put base wrap on first:

Just use enough to cover collar so jig is thin (my opinion). Stock jigs have to much hair.

I use craft fur a little.

If you tie too many and put in tackle box they will rust. Keep a stash in the house if you make a bunch. I make 10-15 at a time and put in peanut butter, mayo and spice jars.
