Morning or afternoon?
« on: October 25, 2019, 09:48:49 AM »
I'm curious if anyone has seen a consistent pattern this time of year regarding the SM bite in the morning vs the afternoon?

In the summer I am out before first light and usually off the water around noon.  My last couple of times out early has not been productive but it has gotten better after the sun was well up.

On the river I prefer evening fishing. Hasnít been a great tactic this year. Seem to always get a couple at sundown.

I found this article by Zona.

https://www.bassmaster.com/tips/zona/my-fall-dilemma

In it he states:

You must remember that the really late fall fishing window is small. Rarely do the fish feed the entire day. The windows of opportunity may last only 15 to 30 minutes and no more than two or three times during a day.

He doesn't give any info on when that might be or what turns them on.  Anyone want to speculate?

An implication of this is that you need to know where they are and be there when they turn on. Not much of a window to find them.  No wonder I find the cold months difficult.

I went out Monday evening on the Juniata at Howe Twp. I knew the water would be OK there with the river being high. Zero fish.  :(

I went out of that same ramp on Wednesday morning and went up river to the bridge and then drifted back to the ramp.  We got 3 SM, but oddly also got a couple of carpsuckers on jerkbaits.

Heading back to HBG the boats were stacked up at the confluence.  I have to assume that they were doing better.

That must be farther up. I just went to where there is a small rapids and looks like you could get upriver on the right side? Pretty much used a Ned rig the whole float. So people were fishing the mouth at Duncannon?

Yes.  We were in a jet and bottomed out a few times but got through.  Ned rig didn't produce anything for us.  Just the jerkbaits and spinnerbaits.

Yes.  At least six boats in a small area.  In a way that said we should have gone there but it would have been tough (if not rude) to muscle in.

next time - move up by the 849 bridge. There are some slack water areas there.
