Warming trend

I've been watching the river temp daily since the arctic chill last week. Today was near 42F at Danville.

A five degree rise is enough to do the trick many times. If you fished the main stem today...you probably caught smallmouth.

I caught 14 within a 50 yard stretch of river over 2.5 hours. I think they were having a tailgate party.....GO PENN STATE!! 

The AM was rainy but around lunch things cleared with partial sun but the wind had flags standing straight out.

  



Water levels are low and crystal clear but the wave action from the wind helped conceal things. A long rod with long casts was the ticket today. They ate about anything.

Nice fish!! A buddy took me out Long level on Thursday - skunked. One boat with 2 guys told my partner they had 8 fish. We went because of good weather forecast.

Did you fish the lower end or the upper end?  The water temp at the upper end will fluctuate more.  A warming trend will warm that up faster.  Could be that is where the other boat caught fish.

42 degrees. Pretty much matches the site Zelmo listed. I think it warmed up 1 degree while we were out. At least my buddy showed me some areas. Never fish there in summer - cannot stand the traffic

I can be horrible.  The ramp is a zoo, and I am almost always by myself so I will only go during the week and launch just before first light.  I usually get off the water around noon before it gets really bad.

This time of year the traffic is down but the docks are out so the ramp can still be an issue.  On Tuesday that was compounded by one side (Lock 2) being out of commission due to debris.

Bright sun ...a problem with no wind and crystal clear water
Water temp dropped 2-3 degrees....another problem?
Maybe they moved to deeper water or to find better food?
I will try another spot but I’m not missing the game....GO PENN STATE 😎

Only thing that stands out to me is: Thursday we had steady weather, sun and blue skies and not much wind (probably steady barometer). Weather down here looked the same as you describe on Friday. So weather on Friday was changing (changing barometer)?
I remember thinking about the overcast conditions Friday morning and the temps were not too bad - could not go fishing.

Let’s analyze...

Rain, sleet and snow through the night. Dark and dreary all morning. Danville water temps around 40F. Small streams in my neighborhood are a little high and muddy.

Let's give it a try...

For the first 45 minutes that I fished it was dark and deary...no wind...water still vodka clear...

Picked up 4 smallmouth including a 3 pounder...all on the Cabin Creek tube.





Then the sun came out and no hits for the next 45 minutes.

On the way back to the car I noticed these bluebirds checking out a best box one of the neighbors has put up along the shoreline. Nice 





Partly sunny and warmer tomorrow with a little water rise and some discoloration to the water...I hope.
