Back in the Saddle!! Alleluia!!
« on: January 16, 2020, 02:21:31 PM »
On December 3rd  I developed pain in my chest and fever. Acted like Pneumonia!! Just didn't get better. Admitted to the hospital Christmas Eve (3 weeks later) with blood clots in both lungs. What a mess!! For 5 weeks I was either in bed or in the hospital. Just started feeling myself a week ago. Will be on blood thinners forever.

But I can still fish. I've been watching the water temp and it has been around 40F for the last several days. Levels were up around 11.5 feet and water color is just perfect. Sooooooo....I braved the wind today because by "fish sense" told me it would be worth it.

Fished from 10:30 AM until around 1 PM. I changed up lures often but it didn't seem to matter whether it was the Baby Predator Craw, Willie Wannabee, or the Cabin Creek tube... if you presented it to them slow and easy they ate it. Had quite a few short strikes and lost fish.

Landed eight smallmouth in a little over 2 hours.

Here are a trio of 3 pounders.

Sorry to hear about your travails, but glad you are feeling good enough to wet a line. Good thing you got out while the weather was good. It might be a while before we get another nice stretch.

Wow!

I was wondering what happened to you - this is your time of the year to catch them.

Glad you are doing better! That had to be quite the scare.

Yeah!! Right now it's 23F and snowing in my backyard. Water temps dropped 4-5 degrees already.
I sure do miss the days when the power plant was up and running. Coal may not be clean but the majority of the chemicals in the water didn't come from coal. Just enough hot water to keep things around 40F would be nice. But I will take whatever I can get.

...glad to read and see you're back at it! Nice smallies!

When I leave this world...I hope I have a fishing rod in my hand...But I hope there are still a few big smallmouth to catch before that happens.
The area I fish around Selinsgrove has deteriorated a lot but you can still find a few 3-4 lb. fish along the Que in winter during high water. That's enough to satisfy this old man.  8)
Also...I have heard bad things about the poor fishing that some guides had this past year around the Harrisburg area and the sores and ulcers that are being seen on fish this fall/winter. I am still catching fish with black spots.
A friend of mine commented on the decrease in cormorants this past year along this section of the main stem. I believe it is because of a lack of food. Between the diseases, cormorants and flathead catfish the smallmouth bass fishery has been depleted markedly.
One more item...Carol Parenzan, the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper is gone. Don't know why she left but she went back to the private business world. Anybody want the job?  :)

Enjoy the snow and ice today and stay safe.

Bill

Hi Bill,
Getting too cold or too low?

Sunbury River gauge is around 10 feet

https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=ctp&gage=sbyp1

That is still good wading depth...although at 12-14 feet I don't have to wade out as far.

But a temperature slide from 40-41F down to 33F over a couple of days really slows them down. You could probably convince a few to bite but it's awfully cold standing out there in 20F air.

It's a shame the fish aren't warm blooded like us so they can keep themselves warm. But then they wouldn't be fish.

In the past I have caught smallmouth with small chunks of ice floating along the shoreline but the water temp was 40F or higher then due to the power plant warming the west shore....no more.  :(
