6/8/20 Fort Henery
« on: June 09, 2020, 08:55:11 AM »
Harry and me headed to the Juniata yesterday for the first time ever but didn't put the boat in because the ramp is to shallow for my trailer and boat, so we went to Fort Henry where we also never fished.  That is about the best looking water I ever fished for smallies but the results weren't spectacular.  We boated four bass and an 18 inch walleye.  The biggest bass was 2 lb and another one was just over a pound.  The other two were about nine inches  Harry lost one and I lost three.  All those I lost were lost on the same orange and black crankbait on the same rod and reel.  They hit hard and then swam at me faster than I could reel line on that rig.  Eventually I lost that lure to a rock that cut my line.  No pics because Harry didn't want his mug on the internet I guess and he threw the 2 pounder and the walleye back right away.
The older I get, the better I used to be.

What ramp was too shallow?

The first launch above Duncannon.  I brought it up on Google Maps and copied and pasted.  I don't know if it works.

Pretty sure that is Amity Hall launch. Been a while since I launched there. Used to launch with a 2 wheel drive spinning the tires the whole way out. I am guessing you have a boat bigger than a jon. Do you think one could have launched a 14' jon boat there? Used to fish there a lot after ice off. That is some skinny water! Newport was still more than 4' which is the lowest I would launch at Newport.

I'm sure you could launch just about any light aluminum boat there.  Maybe I could even launch there if I wanted to back my whole truck in the water like I saw a guy do with a aluminum center console and then be in the water myself.  No thanks.  My trailer is a high roller on 15 inch wheels and my boat weighs a ton (really).  If I can't get the last row of rollers under water, something is going to get pressured to the breaking point.

The HBG gauge has been running around 4.2.  You didn't have any problems launching and retrieving at Ft Hunter at that level?
