Back to Work
« on: November 17, 2020, 05:25:00 PM »
Haven't been working since June 1...time to get back to work.
I've had 5-6 months or rest and relaxation...along with isolation from this damned virus.
Today was a beautiful day for smallmouth on the Susquehanna.
Water temps have dropped to the mid-40's...levels have come up a couple of feet and the water was just right for my hip boots.
Cloudy, breezy conditions with intermittent snow and rain showers are just the ticket...

Fished from 1-3 PM with only the brown pumpkin Undulator with some silicone strands... picked up 8 smallmouth ranging from a couple one pounders to a really nice 3 pounder and a very fat 4 pounder.

3 pounds

4 pounds

Several of the fish still had black spots...

And I had what every fisherman dreams of...

Cold water smallmouth...Huzzah!!

I had the boat out twice in the Spring...wasn't very successful.
All summer the boat sat in the one bay of my garage. Reports I got from some older guys who fished weren't very exciting, water levels were extremely low and I was more content to hit the rifle range. Just too much trouble trailering and launching the boat in the heat...for what?
Earlier this fall the water levels were again extremely low and fishing reports I got were no more exciting.I had a lot of fall yard work to do because I enjoy landscaping my yard even more than summer fishing and in my 76th year...all that becomes harder and gets done a lot slower.
Now that the yard clean-up is done and the colder weather is setting in I feel more invigorated...and it is so easy to throw my boots, my fishing vest and my rod in the back of the van and go wading for 2 or 3 hours (that's my limit).
I am just so thankful that there are some fish here yet.
Hope everybody is avoiding the virus...have a safe holiday season. Gonna be tough this year but things will get better.

Conditions either make or break your success...

Covered the same ground (plus a little more) today that I covered yesterday...

The difference:
1. North wind
2. Bright sun
3. In one day the water had cleared immensely

Put that all together...and the old man only catches 3 smallmouth

Not complaining mind you...just saying !!    ::)  ;)  :)

Dry I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
I have read a lot of your posts and have picked up some great fishing tips.
How much do you think this shallower water is effecting you? How does it change how your fishing?
I know from reading some of your posts you prefer off color water and medium flows.

Thanks

I told my wife when I left today that the day was an experiment just to confirm what I knew would happen (and I just needed to get out of the house). Even one fish would make my day.

The west wind yesterday hardly riled the water because of the location where I fish, I controlled the drift...slowly. The heavier north wind today was a bear. (BAD) I was picking up slimy grass on almost every cast because the lure was being dragged downriver by the wind. I tried fishing upriver and directly downriver to little avail.

Daytime yesterday was like evening with heavy, dark clouds and no sun. Today was like being in a tanning bed with bright sun glistening off the water. (BAD) Hurts the fishes eyes.  ;)

The water had dropped and cleared significantly since yesterday afternoon. (BAD) I do so much better with stained water...which I believe is well-known to most fishermen.

But I did catch a few small fish and had a few short hits...they're there...just a little more cautious.

Sooo...until we get a little more rain and a cloudy day...I will continue my yard clean-up and improving my marksmanship.

Dry
Thank you for the reply! Was very informative.
The way this year has been going with the lack of rain. You could be doing a lot of yard work.  :)
At least now we have more water than we have had. We was negative on our river gauge, -0.4'
at least now it's in the positive. 1.6'

Doug

Troutman that's a pretty good day on the water. It was pretty windy here yesterday.
