Fly in the Ointment

It seems there is a "fly in the ointment" on many occasions. 

The river has risen a little over a foot and I was antsy to get out. Although it had come up the color was great and water temp was 45F...when I got to the river it was overcast and there was a little drizzle but everything else looked great.

In the first hour I picked up 5 smallmouth to 3 pounds and lost a nice what looked like a 4 pounder at my feet. All caught on the green pumpkin Undulator with silicone fibers.





Now the "fly" entered the ointment. A southwest wind started to blow upstream and it felt like the air temp dropped about 10 degrees. It remained overcast but windy and all I could do was drag up bottom grass and leaves.

There are fish there and that makes me smile  ......when all the cards fall into place it should be a good winter.

I usually try to get out about the time everyone else is out hunting "bambi". 
Can't tell you how many times I've seen deer swimming across the river either to or from the islands.

I gave up hunting about 20 years ago but still love shooting sports.

Dry what is the difference between the Undulator and the Willie. To me they almost look the same.

We had a dusting of snow overnight. Got spared the heavier stuff.

The bodies look much alike but the tails are different.

The Undulator has a longer flat tail...similar to a fresh-water leech




The Chillie Willie has a shorter single tail...sort of like a beavertail




I like the action of that flat leech-like tail (Undulator) somewhat better...I think it has more action in the current.

While I have caught countless fish on the Chillie, I have never even had a bite on the Undulator.  Any thoughts on that?
