"Boatless" Bill
« on: July 16, 2021, 11:06:33 AM »
Thinking about changing my screen name to "Boatless Bill" or "BB."

All the rain up north brought the Susquehanna at Selinsgrove up to 15 feet...quite unusual for summer. My wife and I scouted the area yesterday when we visited the ice cream store on the Que.  ::)

So...I got my gear out of the garage closet and walked the shoreline early this AM. Fished from 7-9 but by 9:15 I was sweating so bad I left.

Water had dropped to 13 feet and was coffee colored (without cream). I put on the imitation stone cattie and went to work.

Most of the seven smallmouth that I caught (lost a biggun')...were 9-10 inch "cookie cutters"

There were a couple larger fish...

And one nice 2.5 pounder...

Needless to say I was quite surprised. Might try it again tomorrow morning earlier or later tonight...after my nap!!   8)

Dry as usual, some nice fish!! Good Job!
I seem to also have some good luck fishing from the boat launches. I will go to a launch to check it out, and get a rod out and take some casts and usually catch a few fish.

I'm sure with a little time, you will get some favorite summer bank fishing spots.

Thanks for sharing!!

Bill, are you using the Fitt madtoms?  What color - did you go to the chartreuse because of the stained water?

No wash for me...I am enjoying the high water...don't usually have it in summer. I just don't like the heat and humidity. I may get some more fishing in next week at this rate.  ;D

Yeah...I have the ones that Winco made...just like the Fitt. I have all dark colors. No chartreuse.
Back in the 80's I used chartreuse twisters for walleye. But dark brown and black/brown show up pretty well in stained water. Chartreuse is so..."abnormal."  ;) :)
Besides...in the stained water they probably react to the vibration and movement as much as the color.

They are forecasting the same kind of rise on the HBG gauge.  It surprised me because we arenít getting that much rain.  Are you getting hammered up there?

Been A pretty active week up here. More so to the north of us. A few tornado touch downs.

We have had over 6" of rain in July. A lot of it the last 10 days.

Was out checking the boat ramps, River is roaring pretty good today.
I always have a rod in my truck and usually do some fishing...at least a few casts.

Today I threw a medium heavy rod in my truck and boy I'm glad I did.
Hooked into this 23" SmallMouth. Boy what a fight it took me about 5 minutes to bring him in with the fast current. Took drag a few times.

I grabbed someone at the ramp to take my picture. Then I held him up against my rod, marked a spot and later got a measurement.
I had no scale in my truck...thinking I might have to buy one for that.

Wow.  Fish of a lifetime.  Congrats.

Isnít it ironic that you would catch it from the bank considering that you have 2  boats.

Absolutely fantastic!
Would you believe this low water just above peach bottom?

I have been catching fish at the ramps all year. With some of them being decent size.
I of have been enjoying it. This 23" was the biggest so far at this ramp. But the river was pretty high and muddy today. Pretty fast current.

Zelma
don't tell my wife  ;D

Dry
still catching decent fish off the boats.

The water is probably heading your way.

The nicest thing about catching this fish was the fight it put up. Between the fast current and the size of the fish it's something that will be a fond memory.

This is our big fish so far this year.
