Cold water bassin'
« on: January 25, 2017, 05:55:39 PM »
I have always enjoyed cold water smallmouth fishing. I get a thrill out of making reluctant fish bite.
Today was a prime example.
River is rising...water temperature dropped a little...and the smallmouth that I could find were just nudging my larger jigs like Chillee Willee and the Undulator.
I'd feel the tap...set the hook...and nothing.

On 2 occassions today when that happened today I tied on a diminutive little bait called Willee Wanabee. This little thing has a small hook (size 1) I believe... with a body shape like Chillee Willee but it has silicone fibers attached to the body and is only 2" long.
It has a wire hook guard which some people like but I usually cut it off.

On both occassions today I tried 3 different lure presentations when I was sure there was a smallmouth in the eddy that was being very picky.

Both times they ignored the bigger lure and slammed this little puppy...even requiring forceps to remove the lure from deep in the roof of the mouth. Here's a throat shot.

My cold water experience has usually been that when smallmouth are finicky in cold water...throw the smallest thing that you have.

The hours spent fishing are not subtracted from the lives of men!!
